A unique art experience you won't want to miss! Spend five fun-filled days making art in an artist's studio on Guemes Island. Take a 7 minute adult chaperoned ferry ride on the Guemes ferry and a short walk to an artist’s studio. Explore a variety of mediums in an inspiring, creative atmosphere. Class time is spent not only in the studio, but outdoors on the nearby beach. Classes are small and geared towards each individuals skill level. Each one week session is M-F, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Town students take the 9:15am ferry and return on the 2:30pm ferry.

Professional teaching artists will inspire your child to look closely at the world around them, experiment with materials, try new techniques, while developing his/her motor skills. Sessions are taught by Sue Roberts and other guest artists. All of the sessions other than session 3 and 4 offer the same program, though each week some of our projects may vary slightly to accommodate returning students. Session 3 and 4 will focus on all clay projects.
Sketchbook-Making and Decorative Paper Collage
Students will create beautiful collage papers that will be used to make the cover of their hand-made sketch book. Drawing in the sketchbook will be emphasized throughout the week.
Painting With Watercolors and Acrylics
Students explore the fundamentals of drawing from observation by focusing on composition and value. Learn how to start a painting from prepping the surface to a finished work of art, through concepts of color mixing, blending, and application. Part of class time will be spent outside on the beach, sketching and painting the landscape around us.
Functional and Sculptural Clay Projects
Learn to build functional forms and sculptural pieces using basic hand-building techniques such as slab or coil construction and plaster forms. Students will learn different finishing techniques using clay slips and bright colored glazes.
Clay Concentration: Narrative Clay Sculptures
Sessions 3 and 4
Session 3and 4 are all clay sessions focusing on narrative clay figures and objects. Students will draw out their initial ideas on paper and then spend the week hand-building their sculpture forms in clay using coil, slab and pressmold techniques. Pieces will be glazed and fired by the last day of class so students can admire one anothers imaginative creations.
