Evening Raku and Clay Class
Evening Raku and Clay Class
Tuesdays, October 29 - December 10
5:00pm-8:00pm
(no class November 26)
Six Sessions
In this six week evening session, students will focus on making clay items to be fired in a traditional electric kiln glaze firing, as well as make smallish vessel or animal forms for a raku firing.
Raku is the special technique of creating pottery with open flame.
Demos will include hand-building functional and sculptural clay pieces and wax resist and glazing techniques.
The last class will include a Raku kiln firing with some of the clay pieces made during the session. Folks can create up to two small clay pieces, which will be bisqued fired and then glazed with metallic and/or crackle raku glazes. Students will watch as their molten hot glazed pieces are quickly removed from an outdoor electric kiln and set aflame in a covered metal bin filled with combustible material. Fire needs oxygen in order to burn, so the flames pull oxygen out of the glazes and leave a wonderful ephemeral mix of colors and metallics.
Materials include clay, glazes and firings. Class size is limited. Open to all levels.
